Problem: PDFs in Jstor can be viewed easily in the native interface but attempts to download or print the PDF are only randomly and frustratingly successful.

Workaround:
From the information page for the article Right click on and select "Open in New Window" (or "Open Link in New..." for Firefox)
Then right click on and select "Save Target As.." (or "Save Link as..." for Firefox).
This will allow you to save the PDF to your computer and should allow for a faster download.

Troubleshooting notes:

10/22/09 Problem has resurfaced for the public PCs. Left clicking on one PDF link from a list of results takes me to the article with an IE popup in between and then the PDF is often not available from the public computers but ok in the offices.
Right clicking takes me to a different view and I can usually get to the article irrespective of the PC on which I am working. When this and the examples were show to the Library IT they felt they could fix it for the public workstations and will work on it.
7/14/09 Problem could not be repeated with random testing.
7/21/08 Testing shows this problems still exists. Use workaround.
7/21/08 JSTOR posted the following message on their status page on the 14th July:
System Update, 07/14/08 An error that caused difficulties with the Adobe Reader Find and Search functionality in downloaded PDFs is now fixed. This fix was originally scheduled for the June 16th release but was postponed for further development.

4/30/08 Prior to the new Jstor interface (March/April 2008) this was less of a problem. Jstor also reports that the new kind of PDF they are using is larger than the old one.
